You’ve got a kick-ass beard and are ready to take the next step. Maybe it’s taken you 6 weeks or even a year to get here. Either way, you know moisture and nutrients are needed to take your beard to the next level. Only problem is, there are hundreds of beard products out there. How do you know which one is right for you?

Good news is, the choice generally comes down to one of two product types: beard balms and oils. Amidst the myriad of beard products out there, balms and oils stand as the long-time, undisputed champs of the men’s grooming world, likely because of their versatility, effectiveness and ability to keep your hair and skin hydrated. Let’s break down their differences and similarities to determine which one is right for you.

How Beard Oil and Beard Balm Are Different

Different consistencies. Simply put, beard balm is a solid, slightly waxy substance, whereas beard oil is a liquid. Beard balm can’t spill, and is therefore less messy than beard oil. This is especially important if you intend to take your beard oil with you to work, school or the gym. Most beard oils come in glass containers (which can break if you’re not careful), whereas balms are packaged in unbreakable tin containers.

Different purposes. While both will hydrate and moisturize your hair, beard balm is better for styling and hold. It also leaves your hair with slightly more of a matte finish. Beard balm is effective as a lip balm, whereas beard oil is better at alleviating an itchy beard.

Different levels of penetration. Because it is a liquid and can permeate your hair more easily, beard oil does a better job at moisturizing the skin underneath your beard.

Different application methods. Beard balm is typically “warmed” beforehand by rubbing your hands together (which creates friction and heat), whereas beard oil is applied with a dropper.

How Beard Oil and Beard Balm are Similar

Made with Natural ingredients. The best Beard Oils are made with natural ingredients including Argan Oil and Jojoba Oil. The best Beard Balms are also made with natural ingredients including Shea Butter, Cedarwood and Beeswax.

Both will make your beard look awesome. Beard Oil and Beard Balm will keep your beard looking soft, smooth and healthy-looking.

Both can be applied with beard brushes and combs. Brushes and combs make it easier to apply an even coat. They are also useful for on-the-go grooming, especially during times when you may not want to get the product on your hands (such as before meeting someone for the first time, or before playing sports).

Available in Scented and Unscented varieties. Beard Balms are available in scented and unscented varieties. Beard Oils are also available in scented and unscented varieties. The choice is up to you.

Remember, there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing the beard care product that is right for you. Every beard is different, and different styles and goals call for different products. Don’t be afraid to experiment in order to get it right. You can even use balms and oils at the same time in order to find that perfect combination of hold, moisture and shine.
