Meet JB Junior, A.K.A. John, the man behind the Best Mustache on the Internet.
Q. Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is JB Junior, A.K.A. John, I'm 49 married with 5 boys. I live in Reno, NV, USA. I have been here all but 4 years of my life. I do stand up comedy and enter moustache and beard contests when I am able. I took 3rd place in the partial beard freestyle category at the 2014 World Beard and Moustache competition in Portland, Oregon and 1st place in the Uber Stache category at the MBSC Northern California Moustache and Beard competition in 2016.
Q. Which cause did you choose to donate your $200 prize to and why?
For the donation I am going with Mental Health/Suicide Prevention as this one is personal to me. I have fought severe depression most of my life, I understand how hard it can be to admit you're depressed and how its difficult to get help. I have had it under control for about 8 years. I always wanted to be a face for mental health awareness because of my experience with fighting it, I think because of my look I have, it would capture people's attention and curiosity as to what message I would be talking about!
Q. How long have you been growing your mustache?
I have had facial hair since I was young and could grow a moustache. In my mid twenties it started to grow thicker. When I was little I watched a movie with some guy that had a big moustache, ever since I always wanted to have a big stache myself. It takes about 2 1/2 years to get it at that length, I trim it every couple of months to keep it at that length.
Q. What type of reactions do you get when people see your mustache for the first time? Funniest reaction?
The reactions are endless. People are in amazement with the size and shape, by the way my self-proclaimed "#BIG TIME CURL" that I do is all by hand. It is of great fascination to hair stylists, they always want to know how I style it and what products I use, a blow dryer and pump hair spray works best for me. Styling time is about 20-30 minutes.
Best reactions are mostly from the kids. A 6 year old boy had the best ever, he said " WOW!! Just WOW!!" A little girl caught me off guard one night by saying "That is the biggest and best cowboy hat I've ever seen".
Q. What advice do you have for people trying to grow a mustache?
Commitment! You grow through different stages of length and it can be frustrating at times, not co-operating. Don't give up, no matter what. It will work out.
Q. Will you ever shave your mustache or is it a lifelong partnership at this point?
I will always have a moustache, it is such a part of my life although someday I may cut it back but not anytime soon.
